Middle School 1:1 iPad Program

At TVS we are proud of how we integrate technology into learning. Via our iPad program our students have:

  • Access to apps that promote increased opportunities for interactivity across the curriculum.
  • New ways to engage with educational content (many learning styles).
  • The potential to replace traditional textbooks with interactive content and dramatically reduce their backpack’s weight.
  • Increased opportunities to collaborate.
  • Opportunities to develop important skills for their futures.

As technology continues to change we are constantly reviewing and iterating our program and practices to improve the classroom experience. Our current middle school 1:1 iPad program is structured as follows.

The school provides 1:1 iPads to students in the 5th grades. These iPads are owned by the school, are kept in carts, and do not go home.

Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 are required to bring an iPad to school every day. Our faculty have spent much time learning new skills and recreating their lessons to create an environment in which iPads are a valuable and effective learning tool.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How will my child obtain an iPad?

iPads are purchased through the school. Each iPad comes with a keyboard case. Both the iPad and the case have a three year warranty. Details about pricing and the model that will be available for the 2019-2020 school year, including dates for pickup during the summer, will be communicated during the spring.

WHAT APPS DOES MY CHILD NEED?

Your child's teachers will determine the required apps. Any paid apps that are required will be furnished by the school. Your child may be asked to download free apps.

DOES MY CHILD NEED AN ITUNES ACCOUNT?

Students in grades 6-8 will need an iTunes account in order to download books. They do not need one for downloading apps.

WHAT IF MY CHILD'S IPAD IS DAMAGED OR STOLEN?

All iPads are ordered with the Apple Care + protection plan which covers accidental damage for three years.

If your child's iPad is damaged it is the family's responsibility to obtain service through Apple Care + at an Apple store. Make an appointment at the apple store. If possible, ensure that data is backed up before you go to the Apple store for your appointment.

If Apple gives you a new iPad do not have it setup/restored at the Apple store. The School’s technology staff will setup the iPad as a TVS iPad and restore school related apps. You can then restore any personal data and apps.

Students will be required to lock the iPad in their locker when it is not in use. Sixth grade cubbies will be equipped with locking doors for this purpose.

Ultimately, though, each child is responsible for his/her own iPad as with other personal items of value.

WILL THE INTERNET BE FILTERED ON MY CHILD'S IPAD?

Yes. Your child's iPad will connect to the TVS Student Wi Fi network while at school and will receive the same protective filtering as any other computer at school.

DO I NEED TO HAVE WI FI AT HOME?

While wireless internet connectivity at home is not required, the iPad is much less effective without it, and your child may not be able to complete some assignments. If you are not able to provide wireless internet access at home, please communicate this with your child's teachers so that they can plan accordingly.

WILL MY CHILD BE USING ONLY DIGITAL TEXTBOOKS NEXT YEAR?

At this time, not all publishers offer digital textbooks for the courses we offer. However, we are very sensitive to the issue of heavy backpacks and would like to move toward providing as many digital textbooks for your child as possible.

HOW CAN MY CHILD PRINT FROM THE IPAD?

One of the things we hope to accomplish with this program is a reduction in paper use. However, sometimes printing will be helpful and in these cases, wireless printers will be available in the middle school for your child's use.

WHAT IF THERE ARE TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES WITH MY CHILD'S IPAD?

Both teachers and the school's technology staff will help your child with any software related issues. All iPads are covered for three years under Apple's Apple Care + program.

For hardware issues, including cracked screens, it is the family's responsibility to obtain service through Apple Care + at an Apple store.

WHAT IF THERE ARE TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES WITH MY CHILD'S KEYBOARD CASE?

Logitech keyboard cases have a three year warranty. To file a claim click on this link. You will be asked to provide a purchase date. The purchase date is June of the year that your child was a rising 6th grader. You will also be asked to provide the serial number of the keyboard. The serial number is located on the detachable area of the keyboard.
