Trojan OUtdoor Experience

The mission of the Trojan Outdoor Experience is to use outdoor activities to profoundly increase the respect our students have for themselves, each other, and the natural world. Each outing will provide the opportunity for students, individually and as a group, to practice overcoming adversity through skilled decision making.

Students in third through 12th grade participate in class trips that support the TOE mission. Upper school students also have the opportunity to accompany class trips as student leaders. Student leadership is available to all TVS upper school students. TOE club outings are available to all TVS students.

“It is so incredibly important to take our kids beyond the gates of TVS and let them experience the outdoor world first hand. The lessons gained through our experiences help them learn not only what we can accomplish if we challenge ourselves, but also that in order to be leaders we must see and appreciate where we fit into the grand landscape outside our walls.”

Ropes Course
The Trojan Challenge Course was built in 2009 by Adventure Experiences Inc. Our course consists of seven different high elements which include a climbing wall, giant swing, zip line, power pole, and a series of three linked traversing elements.

The primary use is for current students and faculty, but we have staged a few outside groups. Our most recent was a squadron of fighter pilots and their support staff from the Naval Air Station.

The Trojan Challenge Course allows us to push our students positively out of their comfort zones in an outdoor adventure environment, without ever leaving campus.

Forty-foot Climbing Wall
The wall expands the range of students able to use our ropes course and provides a familiar training environment.

Join the TOE Booster Club!

The TOE Booster Club is an organization within the TVS Parents’ Club for the purpose of supporting the experiential education program. The Trojan Outdoor Experience (TOE) begins in LS, and progresses up through the ninth grade to a senior retreat in the fall. Students are introduced to a variety of activities including hiking, rock climbing, orienteering, and kayaking. The TOE program depends on support from parents. The TOE Booster Club provides support by preparing meals in the school cafeteria prior to the three large trips each year. The field kitchen is manned by parents for the seventh-, eighth-, and ninth-grade trips. In addition to these tasks, parents volunteer to help with grocery shopping and to assist in maintenance of the equipment used by TOE.
